Trip Organization
Fairy Meadows - 2005

I've created this site to help us get our stuff together for the 2005 Fairy Meadows trip (February 12 to 18, 2005).

If you need to know what's been said on email, or need information about who's coming, etc. check out this page. Eventually I will post gear lists, etc, but for now we'll start with who's coming: see below.

If you don't want your name on this website for any reason, just let me know, and I'll mask it immediately. This or any other changes to the site should be sent to ryan@strom.ca

Important Emails - Continuous Thread

Attached is the report from the Fairy Meadows area for snow. Looks dicy.

I've update the finances spreadsheet. Everyone is up to speed.

Heather, you are still owing, I think. I got an empty envelope from you, but nothing afterwards.

Andre has been replaced by Stuart Arch (Stuart can arrange payment to Andre when he gets here - or before, I'll let you guys hash it out).

Lahav has been replaced by Randa Sultan (Randa, you should contact Lahav now, for payment of the deposit and me for the remaining balance owing).

Check the spreadsheet as well for a recommended gear list. Comments are welcome.

Brigid is working on the menu, and you can continue to give her your comments, but remember she's doing this to help us out, so try to keep the food complaints to allergies and possibly methane reduction due to intestinal problems.

Think snow!!!

I've finally updated the spreadsheet with who's paid etc.

www.strom.ca/ryan

According to my records:

Those yet to pay

Gerard Meszaros
Lahav Wolach
Joe Zamudio
Heather Armitage

Let's get those cheques in to secure your spot.

I've got extra cash from some. I think it might be easiest to return money to those who've overpaid (via US$ or various attempts at money laundering - I can send cash in an attache case if it helps you, Dave). This will bring everyone to a $200 balance.

I'm a little confused with Andre. Did you have 2 ballots in - but paid the full $200?

In general check your own record on the spreadsheet and confirm that it is right.

David has a cook lined up (although I have no details on him yet). Myself and Brendan each have wives who are interested as backups if need-be (a cook-off may be req'd if it comes to this.... :-).

There has been some interest in getting a guide. Due to the lack of space and likely difficulty in reaching a consensus on how that guide might be split amongst the group, no guide is being considered. If you have objections, or ideas on how we could make it work, feel free to bring them forth.

Hope all is well and the sun is shining where you are.

I have word on the cook front. He is interested and as far as he know,
available. He has promised to cook for a group entered in the Kokanee
lottery so he has to wait until after that to be able to commit. He says he
can find/suggest an alternate if he cannot make it himself. We agreed to
keep each other updated with any changes. But for the moment, we can
assumed we have a cook lined up.

On the subject of a guide, our subgroup (Heather, Brian & Yvonne and
myself) are pretty comfortable skiing without one. And 20 people is too big
a group to expect a single guide to lead. But we would consider it useful
to have a guide "on tap" in the evening to discuss snow conditions, route
selection etc. so we would be willing to chip in a bit towards a guide
hired by a subgroup that wants to be led. One guide I can suggest is Jamie
Whiteside (678-3474) with whom I have skied as a friend and as a client. I
mentioned it to him on the weekend and he suggested passing on his info to
whoever was inclined to hire a guide.

Cheers, Gerard

Thanks to all who have got their deposits in. Everyone else, get rolling so we know you're committed - special circumstances excepted.

As I think we've mentioned before, the trip is full (except for a spot reserved for a cook). I have no-one in the "possibles" list right now. I hope that this list will serve as a priority offering for people to be called upon when some of us may need to bow out. Send me names for this list (with emails) as you see fit.

I've added a finances spreadsheet to the website (under links) for everyone to see where they stand in terms of payment etc.

Remember to check updates at www.strom.ca/ryan

Also, remember to send Canadian funds. (Martin, I'll send you a refund to keep things straight once the cheque clears, and I see the rate they used).

I'd like to weigh in on the idea of having a guide. I think someone
familiar with the snowpack on a day to day basis would be money well spent.
BC is seeing some of the gruesome snow conditions we have lived with for
many years down here in the desert. After skiing at Durrand glacier in
2000 and Roger's Pass (under the north face of Cheops) in 02 the news from
last year was sobering. My sense is that the rules may be changing every
year even in the interior of BC. What would a guide cost us for a week?
I'm good for the first 20%

Well Fairy Meadow Goers, so it begins.

I just got an account statement from the Alpine Club for about $14,000. After I picked myself up from the floor and sittting back down, I decided we should start a collection for some deposits. I've paid our $500 deposit with the ACC and have thus become the self designated accountant. It would be simplest if everyone got themselves an ACC membership with the hut upgrade to bring everyone to the same rate. In the end it only costs an extra $2/each to go this route. The membership must be valid when we go.

Remember to check out www.strom.ca/ryan under "Uoming Trps" to be updated. All of this email will be posted there so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

I've opened a bank account in my name where I'll be putting the money so I don't spend it over the next 10 months.

I'll need a cheque from everyone totally $200. The deal is that if you were part of the initial consortium (i.e. with David Field) that you can subtract the amount you paid for the ballots from the $200. If you put in a ballot, but were not part of the original consortium, you can deduct the cost of one ballot only (i.e. Mr. Chapman).

Make the Cheque to:

426 9th Street N.E.

H: 403.265.5779
O: 403.247.0200
F: 403.247.4811
C: 403.862.HIKE

I'll deposit all money into the account and pay expenses (including all hut fees) directly from there. As we go along if you need money for deposits or other expenses for various things related to the trip just let me know.

There are two spots remaining. One is reserved for a possible cook we may bring along - more details to follow on that.

If you back out, you are responsible for filling your spot and retrieving your deposit from the new person.
